Free job preparation online: a practical plan
You do not need to pay for coaching to prepare for a job. A good free job preparation plan covers four things: knowing the roles you want, a strong resume, interview practice and a way to track your progress. Here is how to do each one without spending money.
Step 1: Choose the roles and read many job ads
Collect five to ten advertisements for the job you want. Highlight the skills and tools that appear again and again. That repeated list is what employers actually test, and it is your study plan.
Step 2: Fix your resume against those ads
Rewrite your resume so the most relevant skills and projects come first, using the same keywords the advertisements use. Keep it to one or two pages, and describe results (what improved, by how much) rather than only duties.
Step 3: Practise interviews out loud, for free
Reading questions is not preparation; answering them is. Practise with a friend, record yourself, or use a free AI mock interview that asks questions from your resume and the job description and then gives feedback on your answers and delivery.
- Practise at least three full mock interviews before the real one
- Review your filler words and answer length
- Repeat weak answers until they sound natural
Step 4: Build your story bank
Prepare six real stories using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) covering teamwork, problems solved, mistakes, leadership, learning and pressure. They answer most behavioural questions.
Step 5: Track progress and repeat
Keep notes on what feedback you receive and improve one thing at a time. A dashboard that shows your scores over several sessions makes progress visible and keeps you motivated.
