How to answer "Tell me about yourself"

"Tell me about yourself" is usually the first question, and it sets the tone for the whole interview. The best answers are short, relevant to the job, and end by connecting to the role. A reliable structure is present, past, future.

The present-past-future formula

Present: say what you do now (or what you recently finished studying) in one sentence. Past: mention one or two experiences or achievements that prepared you for this role. Future: explain why this role is the logical next step.

Aim for sixty to ninety seconds. If you speak for much longer, you are probably telling your life story instead of answering the question.

Example for an experienced candidate

"I am a backend developer with four years of experience building web services for logistics companies. Most recently I led the move of our order system to a faster database design, which cut report times from minutes to seconds. Before that I worked on payment integrations. I am now looking for a role where I can work on a larger product team, which is why this position stood out."

Example for a fresh graduate

"I have just completed my computer science degree, where my final-year project was a web platform with a live AI component. I built the backend and the database and learned a lot about testing and deployment. I enjoyed the full cycle from idea to a running product, and I am looking for a junior developer role where I can keep learning from experienced engineers."

Mistakes to avoid

Do not recite your resume line by line, share personal details unrelated to work, or speak negatively about a previous employer.

  • Starting from childhood or school years
  • Listing every job without highlights
  • Ending without connecting to the role
  • Reading from notes in a flat voice

Practise it until it sounds natural

Say your answer aloud several times and time it. Record yourself or use an AI mock interview to hear how it comes across. You want it to sound like a confident conversation, not a script.

Practise this out loud, free
