Software engineer interview questions and preparation

Software engineering interviews usually mix technical questions with behavioural ones. Companies want to see how you solve problems, explain your decisions and work with others. Here is what to prepare.

Fundamentals you should be able to explain

Interviewers often start with basics: data structures (arrays, hash maps, trees), time and space complexity, how the web works (HTTP, REST, authentication), and the difference between SQL and NoSQL databases. Being able to explain a concept simply is a stronger signal than reciting a definition.

Questions about your own projects

Expect to be asked why you chose a technology, how your database is structured, how users log in securely, what happens when something fails and how you tested it. Practise explaining your architecture aloud in two minutes.

  • Why this framework or database?
  • How is authentication handled?
  • How do you validate user input?
  • What happens when an external API fails?
  • How did you test the application?

Coding and problem solving

Practise solving problems out loud. State your understanding of the problem, give a simple solution first, then improve it. Mention edge cases such as empty input and large input. Interviewers value clear thinking and communication over a perfect answer.

System design basics

For more senior roles you may design a simple system such as a URL shortener or chat app. Clarify requirements, sketch the main components (client, API, database, cache), discuss trade-offs and mention how it would scale.

Behavioural questions still matter

Prepare stories about debugging a hard problem, disagreeing with a teammate, learning a new technology quickly and handling a deadline. Use the STAR method.

Frequently asked questions

How do I prepare for a software engineering interview?
Review fundamentals, practise coding problems aloud, prepare to explain your own projects in depth, and rehearse behavioural stories.
Do junior developers get system design questions?
Usually only basic ones. Juniors are more often asked about fundamentals, their projects and how they think through problems.
