The STAR method for interview answers

The STAR method is the standard way to answer behavioural interview questions such as "Tell me about a time when...". It stops you from rambling and makes sure every story ends with a result. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result.

What each letter means

Situation: give the context in one or two sentences. Task: explain what you were responsible for. Action: describe what you personally did, step by step. Result: say what happened, with numbers if you have them, and what you learned.

  • Situation: where and when, briefly
  • Task: your goal or responsibility
  • Action: the steps you took (this is the longest part)
  • Result: the outcome and the lesson

A worked example

Question: "Tell me about a time you handled a tight deadline."

"In my final-year project, our demo was moved forward by two weeks (situation). I was responsible for the database and the login system, which everything else depended on (task). I listed what was essential, dropped two nice-to-have features, agreed the new plan with my teammate, and worked in short daily goals, testing each part as I finished it (action). We demonstrated a stable version on time and our supervisor praised how reliable it was. I learned that cutting scope early beats rushing everything (result)."

Common STAR mistakes

The most frequent problem is spending too long on the situation and too little on your own actions. The second is saying "we" throughout, so the interviewer cannot tell what you did. The third is forgetting the result.

Building a STAR story bank

Write five or six stories now: a success, a failure, a conflict, a leadership moment, a quick-learning moment and a pressure moment. Practise each aloud so you can adapt it to whichever question you are asked.
